A Weekend with Solomon Douglas

Date

Saturday, May 17th

Location

The MultiPurpose room in the Education Complex at UCF.

Times

10:00am - 4:00pm

Classes

Blues Dancing (10:00am - 11:15am)

This class will present the basics of weight-changes and traveling steps in Blues dancing. We'll also introduce leading and following for the types of groovy movement that are fundamental to Blues dancing, such as the fish-tail.

Jazz movement (11:15am - 12:30pm)

It's impossible to be a good social dancer without being good at moving your own body, and one of the best ways to learn how to move is to learn solo vernacular jazz and blues dance. This non-partnered class will introduce some classic jazz movement.

Lunch! (12:30pm - 1:30pm)

Improvisation and Creativity in Lindy Hop (1:30pm - 2:45pm)

Making stuff up is just as essential to lindy hop dancing as it is to jazz music, and that'll be the topic of this class: improvisation within the lead-follow conversation and improvisation within your own movement and footwork.

Putting It All Together (2:45 - 4:00pm)

We'll revisit all the topics of the day and work on combining them into your lindy hop: blues dancing, improvisation, and jazz movement are all essential to being a well-rounded lindy hopper, and in this class we'll integrate everything we've done.
